This was the result of her own philosophy and she was happy to admit as such. But the smallest minority on earth is the individual.

Campus Speech: Why Reason When I Can Riot?

He discovers the self. It is time to clarify the principles involved. What attracts people to groups centered on unchosen characteristics. The frequent historical spectacle of a great innovator who, in his lifetime, is jeered, denounced, obstructed, persecuted by his countrymen, and then, a few years after his death, is enshrined in a national monument and hailed as a proof of greatness of the German or French or Italian or Cambodian race—is as revolting a spectacle of collectivist expropriation, perpetrated by racists, as any expropriation of material wealth perpetrated by communists.

But few people realized that America did not melt men into the gray conformity of a collective: The reasons are entirely personal. But this merely means that both governments are wrong; it does not excuse the policy of the Southern racists. In conclusion, I shall quote from an astonishing editorial in The N.

These are but two examples of what happens when some ideas are taken to the extremes. Where was she during the fight to destroy Jim Crow. Rand has extreme ideas of both of these and expresses them often in Anthem. Racial discrimination, imposed and enforced by law, is so blatantly inexcusable an infringement of individual rights that the racist statutes of the South should have been declared unconstitutional long ago.

One way Ayn expresses her idea of objectivism is by making the antagonist in the book very oriented towards the whole. Early in the essay she claimed: Where are her powerful essays and arguments against things like the white primaryLittle Rockand the Montgomery bus boycott.

Racism is the lowest, most crudely primitive form of collectivism. The spectacular results and achievements of that trend need no restatement here. She actually believed that the world was the world she created in her potboiler novels. No group has any proper intellectual leadership today or any proper representation.

But the far more common racist position was, and is, the one that Rand rules out: In the corner of the room, near the entrance, stood an armed police officer wearing a bulletproof vest. The absolute state is merely an institutionalized form of gang rule, regardless of which particular gang seizes power.

No political system can establish universal rationality by law or by force.

It is proper to forbid all discrimination in government-owned facilities and establishments: She advocated positive ideals worth pursuing, ideals powerful enough to counteract tribalist trends. It is hard to say which is the more outrageous injustice: The policy of the businessmen has, for some time, been the most suicidal one in this respect.

It has no right to violate the right of private property by forbidding discrimination in privately owned establishments. But capitalism is the only system that functions in a way which rewards rationality and penalizes all forms of irrationality, including racism. Rand makes the case that just like collectivism, racism is rewarding or punishing based on race or lineage rather than actions performed or character demonstrated.

This we can all agree is irrational, if productivity or value creation is the goal. Ayn Rand characterized racism as “the lowest, most crudely primitive form of collectivism.”[1] This crudest form of collectivism was not long ago embraced.

Ayn Rand Anthem

- Ayn Rand's Anthem In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand there are many themes. These themes include love, desire, equality, freedom, and individuality.

Ayn Rand on Racism

Most of these themes are all shown by the majority of the characters in the book, especially Equality Below is a interview, part of Columbia University’s “Ayn Rand on Campus” radio series, in which Rand discusses the purpose and value of education, and touches on the effects of contemporary trends in education.

Rand wrote one essay (to my knowledge) speaking out against racism. But her anti-racism was more concerned with attempts to ameliorate past racism than racist actions themselves.

Her property-based individualism was not only completely inadequate to deal with racism, but led her to actively endorse racist actions.
